Demonstrative Pronouns (Overview)
๐ Grammaticanotitie
Dutch demonstratives point to specific objects or people. There are four main words: 'deze', 'die', 'dit', and 'dat'. The choice depends on two things: the gender of the noun (de-word or het-word) and the distance from the speaker (close or far).

This (Close, de-words)

Die (Ver weg, de-woorden)
That (Far, de-words)
๐ Grammaticanotitie

In Dutch, all plural nouns use 'de' as their article. Therefore, all plural nouns use 'deze' for 'these', regardless of their singular gender.

๐ Grammaticanotitie
When introducing or identifying something for the first time without naming the noun immediately after the demonstrative, we usually use 'Dit' or 'Dat', even for people or de-words.

Here and There
๐ Grammaticanotitie
Demonstratives are often paired with 'hier' (here) and 'daar' (there) to emphasize distance. Deze/Dit = Hier. Die/Dat = Daar.
