Modal Verbs + Infinitive
๐ Grammaticanotitie
In Dutch, modal verbs (kunnen, moeten, mogen, willen) are used with a second verb. The modal verb is conjugated and placed in the second position of the sentence. The second verb (the main action) remains in its infinitive form and is placed at the very end of the sentence.

Moeten (Vervoeging)
Moeten (Conjugation)
๐ Grammaticanotitie
The verb 'moeten' (must/to have to) is relatively regular in the present tense. Singular: ik moet, jij moet, hij/zij/het moet. Plural: wij/jullie/zij moeten. Since the stem 'moet' already ends in -t, no extra -t is added for 'jij' or 'hij'.

Mogen (Vervoeging)
Mogen (Conjugation)
๐ Grammaticanotitie
The verb 'mogen' (may/to be allowed to) is irregular. Singular: ik mag, jij mag, hij/zij/het mag. Plural: wij/jullie/zij mogen. Like 'kunnen', the 3rd person singular (hij mag) does NOT take a -t.

๐ Grammaticanotitie
'Mogen' is used to ask for or give permission. It is also used in polite requests. In Dutch, the main verb is sometimes omitted if it's obvious (e.g., 'Mag ik een appel?' implies 'hebben' or 'eten').

Willen (Vervoeging)
Willen (Conjugation)
๐ Grammaticanotitie
The verb 'willen' (to want) is irregular. Singular: ik wil, jij wilt/wil, hij/zij/het wil. Plural: wij/jullie/zij willen. Note that 'hij wil' does NOT take a -t.

Word Order (Sentence Structure)
๐ Grammaticanotitie
In a standard sentence with a modal verb, the modal verb is the 'finite verb' (second position). Any other information (time, place, object) comes after the modal, and the infinitive is pushed to the very end.

Inversie met 'je/jij'
Inversion with 'je/jij'
๐ Grammaticanotitie
When 'je' or 'jij' follows the verb (in questions or after a starting phrase), the -t is dropped for 'kunnen' and 'willen'. For 'moeten', the stem already ends in -t, so it stays 'moet je'. For 'mogen', it remains 'mag je'.

Ontkenning met 'niet'
Negation with 'niet'
๐ Grammaticanotitie
To negate a sentence with a modal verb, 'niet' usually comes after the modal verb and before the infinitive at the end. If there is an object or adverb, 'niet' usually follows it.
