Default Enclisis (Beginning of a sentence)
When an unstressed object pronoun starts a clause or sentence in European Portuguese, it must be placed after the verb, attached with a hyphen (ênclise).
📌 Nota gramatical
In European Portuguese, you can never start a sentence with an object pronoun (unlike in Brazilian Portuguese). The pronoun must go after the conjugated verb, joined by a hyphen. Example: 'Ajudam-me' (They help me).
Exemplo
Proclisis with Negation (Não)
Negative words like 'não' (no, not) act as a 'magnetic' trigger that pulls the object pronoun before the verb (próclise).
📌 Nota gramatical
Whenever a negative word precedes the verb, the pronoun is placed between the negative word and the verb. This is mandatory in both European and Brazilian Portuguese.
Exemplo
Proclisis with Subordinating Conjunctions
Conjunctions like 'que' (that), 'porque' (because), and 'quando' (when) attract the pronoun before the verb.
📌 Nota gramatical
Subordinating conjunctions create a magnetic pull for weak pronouns, forcing them into proclisis position immediately after the conjunction and before the verb.
Exemplo
Proclisis with Interrogative Words
Question words like 'onde' (where), 'quem' (who), 'como' (how), and 'quando' (when) trigger proclisis.
📌 Nota gramatical
Direct and indirect questions starting with an interrogative word require the pronoun to sit directly between the question word and the verb.
Exemplo
Proclisis with Adverbs
Adverbs such as 'sempre' (always), 'já' (already), 'talvez' (maybe), and 'aqui' (here) pull the pronoun before the verb.
📌 Nota gramatical
In European Portuguese, simple adverbs act as attractors for weak pronouns, placing them in proclisis. Note that a comma after the adverb can sometimes break this pull, but without a comma, proclisis is standard.
Exemplo
Pronoun Placement with 'Estar a + Infinitive'
In European Portuguese, the continuous form uses 'estar a + infinitive'. The pronoun can attach to the infinitive or be pulled before 'estar'.
📌 Nota gramatical
When using the progressive structure ('estou a comer'), you can place the pronoun before the conjugated auxiliary verb 'estar' (if a trigger exists) or attach it with a hyphen to the main infinitive ('estou a vê-lo').
Exemplo
Enclisis with the Infinitive
An independent or governed infinitive verb takes enclisis by default if no proclitic trigger precedes it.
📌 Nota gramatical
When an infinitive verb stands alone or follows a preposition without a proclitic trigger, the pronoun attaches to the end of the infinitive. Note that final '-r' drops and becomes '-lo/-la/-los/-las' with direct object pronouns.
Exemplo
Pronoun Placement with Modal Verbs + Infinitive
With modal verbs like 'poder' (can), 'querer' (want), and 'dever' (must), the pronoun can attach to the modal or to the infinitive.
📌 Nota gramatical
You have two main options: attach it to the modal verb ('Posso ajudar-te') or attach it to the infinitive ('Posso-te ajudar' - though attaching to the infinitive 'posso ajudar-te' is often preferred in formal European Portuguese).
Exemplo
Enclisis at the Beginning of a Paragraph or Dialogue
Direct speech responses and opening sentences must use enclisis.
📌 Nota gramatical
In conversational turns, if you reply with a verb, it must start with enclisis. You cannot lead a conversational turn with a standalone pronoun in European Portuguese.
Exemplo
Proclisis with Indefinite Pronouns
Indefinite pronouns such as 'tudo' (everything), 'alguém' (someone), and 'tudo' act as triggers for proclisis.
📌 Nota gramatical
Words that refer to an unspecified quantity or person ('tudo', 'alguém', 'alguns') pull the object pronoun directly before the verb in European Portuguese.
Exemplo
Phonetic Changes in Enclisis: -lo, -la, -los, -las
When direct object pronouns 'o, a, os, as' attach to a verb ending in -r, -s, or -z, the verb ending drops and the pronoun changes.
📌 Nota gramatical
Verb endings -r, -s, or -z drop their final letter, gain an acute or circumflex accent on the final vowel, and the pronoun becomes -lo(s)/-la(s). Example: 'falar' + 'o' = 'falá-lo'.
Exemplo
Phonetic Changes in Enclisis: -no, -na, -nos, -nas
When direct object pronouns 'o, a, os, as' attach to verb forms ending in nasal sounds (-m, -ão, -õe), the pronouns become -no, -na, -nos, -nas.
📌 Nota gramatical
If a verb ends in a nasal sound (like 3rd person plural 'comem' or 'dão'), the attached direct object pronoun adds an 'n' to become -no, -na, -nos, -nas instead of -o, -a, -os, -as.
