Grundregel i obestämd form: stor (en) – stort (ett) – stora (plural)
The three basic adjective forms: base form (en), -t (ett), -a (plural)
📌 Grammatiknotering
Swedish adjectives agree with the noun they describe in gender and number: base form with en-words (en stor bil), +t with ett-words (ett stort hus), and +a with all plurals (stora bilar/hus).
Exempel
Predikativ ställning (efter vara, bli, kännas, se ... ut)
Predicative adjectives ALSO agree in Swedish!
📌 Grammatiknotering
Unlike German or Dutch, Swedish adjectives agree with the subject even when they come AFTER the verb ('är', 'blir', 'ser ... ut'): Bilen är dyr. Huset är dyrt. Bilarna är dyra.
Exempel
Adjektiv på lång betonad vokal får -tt i neutrum: ny -> nytt, blå -> blått
Adjectives ending in a stressed vowel add -tt for ett-words
📌 Grammatiknotering
One-syllable adjectives ending in a long vowel (ny, fri, blå, grå, rå) take double -tt in the ett-form and shorten the vowel sound: ett nytt jobb, ett blått hav.
Exempel
Adjektiv på vokal + d får -tt: röd -> rött, glad -> glatt, god -> gott
Adjectives ending in vowel + -d change -d to -tt in the ett-form
📌 Grammatiknotering
When an adjective ends in a long vowel + -d (röd, god, glad, bred, död), the -d drops and becomes -tt in the neuter form, shortening the vowel: ett rött äpple, ett gott kaffe, ett glatt besked.
Exempel
Adjektiv på konsonant + d får -t: hård -> hårt, känd -> känt
Adjectives ending in consonant + -d replace -d with -t
📌 Grammatiknotering
If a consonant precedes -d (hård, blind, känd, stängd), the -d is replaced by a single -t in the ett-form: ett hårt bröd, ett känt museum, tåget är inställt.
Exempel
Adjektiv på vokal + t får -tt: vit -> vitt, söt -> sött, våt -> vått
Adjectives ending in a long vowel + -t double the -t in the ett-form
📌 Grammatiknotering
Adjectives ending in a long vowel + -t (vit, söt, våt, fet, het) add a second -t in the ett-form and shorten the vowel: ett vitt papper, ett sött barn. Adjectives in consonant + -t (svart, kort, trött) do not change: ett svart bord, ett kort möte.
Exempel
Adjektiv på -en tappar -n framför -t: öppen -> öppet, vaken -> vaket
Adjectives ending in unstressed -en replace -n with -t in the ett-form
📌 Grammatiknotering
Adjectives ending in unstressed -en (öppen, vaken, ledsen, mogen, naken) drop the -n before -t in the neuter, and drop the unstressed 'e' in the plural: öppen – öppet – öppna.
Exempel
Oregelbundna adjektivet liten: liten – litet – små
The highly irregular adjective 'small/little': liten, litet, lilla, små
📌 Grammatiknotering
'Liten' (small) has completely distinct forms: 'en liten bil' (en-word), 'ett litet hus' (ett-word), 'den lilla bilen / det lilla huset' (definite singular), and 'små bilar / små hus' (all plurals!).
Exempel
Oböjliga adjektiv: bra, gratis, extra, fel, lagom, äkta
Invariable adjectives that never change for gender or number
📌 Grammatiknotering
Some very common adjectives end in a vowel or -s and never take -t or -a: bra (good), gratis (free), extra, fel (wrong), lagom (just right), äkta (genuine), spännande (exciting).
Exempel
Adjektivets a-form efter min, din, Lisas, denna
Definite adjective form (-a) after possessives and demonstratives
📌 Grammatiknotering
Whenever an adjective stands after a possessive (min, din, hans, vår), a genitive (Lisas), or 'denna/detta', the adjective ALWAYS takes the -a ending (and 'liten' becomes 'lilla'), even in the singular!
