Imperativ = verbets stam!
The imperative form IS the verb stem (used to identify verb groups)
📌 Grammatiknotering
In Swedish, the imperative (command form) is identical to the verb stem—the base form from which all other tenses are built. There is only one imperative form whether addressing one person or many.
Exempel
Grupp 1 (-ar-verb): Imperativ slutar på -a (samma som infinitiv)
Group 1 verbs: Imperative ends in -a (identical to the infinitive)
📌 Grammatiknotering
For Group 1 verbs (whose present tense ends in -ar), drop the '-r' from the present tense. Thus, the imperative ends in '-a', just like the infinitive: prat-ar -> Prata!, öppn-ar -> Öppna!, stann-ar -> Stanna!
Exempel
Grupp 2 (-er-verb): Imperativ slutar på konsonant (utan -a/-er)
Group 2 verbs: Drop -er from the present (or -a from the infinitive)
📌 Grammatiknotering
For Group 2 verbs (present tense in -er), drop '-er' (or drop '-a' from the infinitive) so the imperative ends in a consonant: ring-er -> Ring!, stäng-er -> Stäng!, köp-er -> Köp!, läs-er -> Läs!
Exempel
Grupp 3 (kortverb): Imperativ slutar på lång vokal (samma som infinitiv)
Group 3 short verbs: Imperative is the one-syllable vowel stem
📌 Grammatiknotering
For Group 3 verbs (presens in -r after a long vowel), drop '-r'. The imperative is identical to the infinitive: tro-r -> Tro!, bo-r -> Bo!, klä-r -> Klä!
Exempel
Grupp 4 (starka och oregelbundna verb): Ta bort -er eller -r
Group 4 strong/irregular verbs: Drop -er or -r from the present tense
📌 Grammatiknotering
Strong and irregular verbs also use their stem as the imperative: skriv-er -> Skriv!, drick-er -> Drick!, komm-er -> Kom! (spelled with one 'm'), gå-r -> Gå!, se-r -> Se!, ta-r -> Ta!, är -> Var! (be!).
Exempel
Negativ imperativ: Imperativ + inte
Negative commands ('Don't...'): Imperative verb + 'inte'
📌 Grammatiknotering
To form a negative command ('Don't do that!'), place 'inte' (or 'aldrig') AFTER the imperative verb—never before it!
Exempel
Ordföljd vid negations- och objektpronomen i imperativ
With unstressed object pronouns, the pronoun precedes 'inte' in imperatives
📌 Grammatiknotering
When a negative imperative has an unstressed object pronoun or reflexive pronoun (mig, dig, honom, den, det), the pronoun normally stands between the imperative verb and 'inte': 'Glöm det inte!', 'Oroa dig inte!'.
Exempel
Artiga uppmaningar med gärna, tack eller är du snäll
Softening imperatives with 'gärna', 'tack', or 'är du snäll'
📌 Grammatiknotering
Swedish does not have a single universal word like 'please'. Instead, soften imperatives by adding 'gärna' (gladly/please) right after the verb, or 'tack' / 'är du snäll' at the end of the sentence.
Exempel
Artiga frågor som uppmaning: Kan du...? / Skulle du kunna...?
Polite requests using modal questions instead of bare imperatives
📌 Grammatiknotering
In everyday Swedish, requests to strangers or colleagues are usually phrased as questions with 'Kan du...?' (Can you...?) or 'Skulle du kunna...?' (Could you...?) rather than bare imperatives.
Exempel
Uppmaningar i första person plural: Ska vi...? / Låt oss...
'Let's...': 'Ska vi + infinitive?' or formal 'Låt oss + infinitive!'
📌 Grammatiknotering
To say 'Let's...' in everyday Swedish, use 'Ska vi...?' ('Ska vi gå nu?') or 'Kom så går vi!'. 'Låt oss + infinitive' exists in formal or solemn style.
