Aktiv vs. passiv sats: Objektet blir subjekt!
Active vs. Passive: Focusing on what happens rather than who does it
📌 Grammatiknotering
In an active sentence, the subject performs the action ('Polisen stoppade bilen'). In a passive sentence, the receiver of the action becomes the subject ('Bilen stoppades av polisen'). Swedish has two ways to form the passive: the compact '-s' suffix (s-passiv) and 'bli + past participle' (bli-passiv).
Exempel
Hur s-passiv bildas i presens: ersätt -r/-er med -s!
Forming present-tense s-passive: replace the present suffix -r/-er with -s
📌 Grammatiknotering
In the present tense, simply replace the final '-r' (Groups 1 & 3) or '-er' (Groups 2 & 4, though '-es' also exists in formal style) with '-s': öppnar -> öppnas, stänger -> stängs, köper -> köps, säljer -> säljs, bjuder -> bjuds.
Exempel
S-passiv i infinitiv, preteritum och supinum: lägg till -s direkt!
In infinitive, past, and supinum, simply attach -s to the active form!
📌 Grammatiknotering
In all tenses other than the present, form the s-passive simply by adding '-s' to the active form: Infinitive: kan lagas (can be repaired); Preteritum: öppnades, köptes, byggdes, skrevs; Supinum: har öppnats, har köpts, har skrivits.
Exempel
När används s-passiv? Regler, instruktioner, skyltar och vanor
When to prefer the s-passive: general rules, instructions, signs, and news
📌 Grammatiknotering
The s-passive is by far the most common passive in Swedish, especially when no specific agent is mentioned—in instructions, recipes, signs, notices, general truths, and news reports.
Exempel
Bli-passiv: blir / blev / har blivit + perfekt particip
The 'bli'-passive: bli + past participle (emphasizing a single event or change of state)
📌 Grammatiknotering
The second passive construction uses 'bli' (blir, blev, har blivit) + the past participle, which MUST agree with the subject in gender and number (en: -ad/-d/-t/-en, ett: -at/-t, plural: -ade/-da/-ta/-na)!
Exempel
Perfekt participets böjning efter bli och vara (stängd – stängt – stängda)
Agreement of the past participle (en, ett, plural) vs. invariable supinum!
📌 Grammatiknotering
Do NOT confuse the Supinum (used only after 'har/hade', always ends in -t/-it and NEVER agrees) with the Past Participle (used after 'är/blir' and before nouns, ALWAYS agrees like an adjective: en stängd dörr, ett stängt fönster, stängda dörrar)!
Exempel
Handling (blir/stängs) vs. resultat/tillstånd (är stängd)
Action passive (stängs / blir stängd) vs. resulting state (är stängd)
📌 Grammatiknotering
Compare: 'Butiken stängs klockan sex' (action: someone closes it at 6) vs. 'Butiken är stängd på söndagar' (state: it is in a closed state on Sundays).
Exempel
Deponensverb: verb som slutar på -s men har AKTIV betydelse!
Deponent verbs: verbs that always end in -s but have an active meaning
📌 Grammatiknotering
Watch out! Several very common Swedish verbs end in '-s' in all tenses even though their meaning is 100% ACTIVE (they have no form without -s): hoppas (hope), minnas (remember), trivs/trivas (enjoy oneself/feel at home), lyckas (succeed), låtsas (pretend), finnas (exist), tyckas/verka (seem), svettas (sweat), andas (breathe).
Exempel
Reciproka verb på -s (varandra): vi ses, vi hörs, vi träffas, de kramas
Reciprocal -s verbs meaning 'each other': ses, hörs, träffas, mötas, hjälpas åt
📌 Grammatiknotering
With a plural subject, the '-s' ending often expresses a mutual/reciprocal action ('each other'): Vi ses imorgon! (See you tomorrow!), Vi hörs! (We'll be in touch!), Vi träffas klockan fem (We meet at five), De kramas (They hug each other), Vi hjälps åt (We help each other).
Exempel
Aktiv omskrivning med man i stället för passiv
Using active 'man' as a natural alternative to the passive
📌 Grammatiknotering
In everyday spoken Swedish, instead of a passive sentence ('Hur sägs det på svenska?'), speakers very often prefer an active sentence with the general pronoun 'man' ('Hur säger man det på svenska?').
