BIFF-regeln: I Bisats kommer Inte Före det Finita verbet
The BIFF rule: In a Subordinate clause, 'inte' (and other sentence adverbs) stands BEFORE the finite verb!
📌 Grammatiknotering
Swedish teachers call this the BIFF rule: 'I Bisats står Inte Före det Finita verbet'. In main clauses, 'inte' comes AFTER the verb ('Jag kommer inte'), but in subordinate clauses, 'inte' comes BEFORE the finite verb ('...eftersom jag inte kommer')!
Exempel
Bisatsens fasta formel: Bisatsinledare + Subjekt + Satsadverbial + Finit verb
Fixed subordinate clause formula: Conjunction + Subject + Sentence Adverb + Finite Verb
📌 Grammatiknotering
Unlike main clauses, subordinate clauses NEVER invert! They always follow the strict order: 1) Subordinating conjunction, 2) Subject, 3) Sentence adverbial (inte/alltid/aldrig), 4) Finite verb, 5) Infinite verb, 6) Object/Adverbial.
Exempel
Alla satsadverbial följer BIFF-regeln: alltid, aldrig, ofta, redan, kanske, tyvärr
Not just 'inte': all sentence adverbs (alltid, aldrig, ofta, redan, sällan) precede the verb in a bisats
📌 Grammatiknotering
The BIFF rule applies to ALL sentence adverbs (satsadverbial), not only 'inte': alltid (always), aldrig (never), ofta (often), sällan (seldom), redan (already), kanske (maybe), tyvärr (unfortunately), gärna (gladly).
Exempel
Ordföljd i bisats med hjälpverb (har, hade, kan, ska, måste)
With two verbs in a bisats, 'inte' stands BEFORE the auxiliary verb!
📌 Grammatiknotering
When a subordinate clause contains an auxiliary or modal verb (har, hade, kan, ska, vill, måste) + supinum/infinitive, the sentence adverb goes BEFORE the finite auxiliary verb: '...eftersom jag inte har ätit', '...att hon inte kan komma'.
Exempel
Bisats först i meningen -> Huvudsatsen får inversion!
When a subordinate clause comes first, the main clause starts with its finite verb
📌 Grammatiknotering
Compare the two halves of a complex sentence: inside the subordinate clause, order is straight (Subject + inte + Verb); then the main clause immediately starts with its finite verb (Position 2) followed by the main-clause subject!
Exempel
Indirekta frågor med frågeord (Jag vet inte var han bor)
Indirect wh-questions are subordinate clauses (Subject before Verb!)
📌 Grammatiknotering
When a question word (vad, var, när, hur, varför, vem) introduces an embedded/indirect question after 'Jag vet inte...', 'Kan du säga...', or 'Jag undrar...', it is a SUBORDINATE clause: no inversion, and 'inte' goes before the verb!
Exempel
Indirekta frågeordsfrågor där frågeordet ÄR subjekt: obligatoriskt som!
Inserting 'som' when 'vem', 'vad', or 'vilken' is the subject of an indirect question
📌 Grammatiknotering
Crucial Swedish rule! In an indirect question, if the question word (vem, vad, vilken/vilket/vilka) is the SUBJECT of the subordinate clause, you MUST insert the marker 'som' right after it so it doesn't look like a direct question!
Exempel
Relativsatser med som är bisatser!
Relative clauses with 'som' (who/which/that) follow subordinate word order
📌 Grammatiknotering
Any relative clause starting with 'som' is a subordinate clause, so 'inte', 'aldrig', 'ofta', and 'alltid' stand BEFORE the finite verb.
Exempel
Ingen inversion om ett adverbial står direkt efter att
Keep Subject before Verb after 'att' in standard written subordinate clauses
📌 Grammatiknotering
In standard Swedish, place time/place adverbials at the end of the subordinate clause rather than right after 'att', so the subject stays right after the conjunction: 'Hon sa att hon skulle resa till Rom imorgon'.
Exempel
Objektspronomen och reflexiva pronomen i bisats
No object shift in subordinate clauses: pronouns stay AFTER the verb
📌 Grammatiknotering
Because 'inte' already stands BEFORE the verb in a subordinate clause, object pronouns and reflexive pronouns stay in their normal position AFTER the verb: '...eftersom jag inte känner honom', '...när hon inte skyndar sig'.
