Allmän bisatsinledare: att (that)
'Att' (that) introduces content clauses after verbs of saying, thinking, knowing
📌 Grammatiknotering
'Att' (pronounced [at], unlike the infinitive marker 'att' which is often pronounced [ɔ] in casual speech) means 'that' and introduces subordinate clauses after säga, tro, tycka, veta, hoppas, se, höra. Like in English, it can often be omitted after 'tror/tycker/säger'.
Exempel
Villkor och indirekt ja/nej-fråga: om (if / whether)
'Om' means both conditional 'if' and indirect question 'if / whether'
📌 Grammatiknotering
As a subordinating conjunction, 'om' has two core uses: 1) Conditional 'if' ('Om du har tid kan vi fika'), and 2) Indirect yes/no question 'if/whether' ('Jag undrar om du har tid').
Exempel
Orsak: eftersom och därför att (because / since)
Causal conjunctions: 'eftersom' (because/since) and 'därför att' (because)
📌 Grammatiknotering
Both 'eftersom' and 'därför att' mean 'because' and introduce subordinate clauses. Difference in placement: 'eftersom' can stand EITHER at the beginning of the sentence or in the middle; 'därför att' almost always stands in the middle (and answers 'Varför?').
Exempel
Kontrast i ordföljd: för (samordnande) vs. eftersom / därför att (underordnande)
'För' (for/because - main clause!) vs. 'eftersom / därför att' (subordinate clause!)
📌 Grammatiknotering
Pay close attention! 'För' (because/for) is a COORDINATING conjunction, so it is followed by main-clause word order ('inte' AFTER verb: 'för jag har inte tid'). 'Eftersom' and 'därför att' are SUBORDINATING ('inte' BEFORE verb: 'eftersom jag inte har tid').
Exempel
Tidpunkt: när (when / whenever) vs. då
Temporal 'när' (when): used for past, present, and future!
📌 Grammatiknotering
Unlike German (als vs. wenn), Swedish uses 'när' for ALL time clauses—single past events, repeated past events, present habits, and future events! ('Då' can also be used as a synonym of 'när' in more formal narratives).
Exempel
Samtidighet: medan (while)
'Medans / medan' (while): two actions happening at the same time
📌 Grammatiknotering
In standard written Swedish, 'medan' (often pronounced 'medans' in speech) means 'while' and links two simultaneous actions.
Exempel
Tidsföljd: innan (before) och efter att / sedan (after)
Before and after with clauses: 'innan' (before) and 'efter att' (after)
📌 Grammatiknotering
When followed by a whole clause (subject + verb), 'before' is 'innan' and 'after' is 'efter att' (or 'sedan'). Compare with prepositions before a noun: 'före maten' vs. 'innan vi äter'; 'efter maten' vs. 'efter att vi har ätit'.
Exempel
Tills (until) och så fort / så snart (as soon as)
'Tills' (until) and 'så fort / så snart' (as soon as)
📌 Grammatiknotering
'Tills' (until) and 'så fort' / 'så snart' (as soon as) introduce temporal subordinate clauses.
Exempel
Motsats (koncessiv bisats): trots att och fast / fastän (although / even though)
Expressing 'although / even though': 'trots att' and 'fast / fastän'
📌 Grammatiknotering
'Trots att' (despite the fact that / even though) and 'fastän' / 'fast' (although) introduce concessive subordinate clauses. (Compare with preposition 'trots + noun': 'trots regnet' vs. 'trots att det regnade').
Exempel
Avsikt och följd: för att (in order to) och så att (so that)
Purpose and result: 'för att + infinitive' (in order to) and 'så att + clause' (so that)
📌 Grammatiknotering
To express purpose when the subject is the same, use 'för att + bare infinitive' ('Jag studerar för att lära mig svenska'). When a full clause with a subject follows ('so that'), use 'så att' ('Jag pratar långsamt så att alla förstår').
