Grundregeln för dubbel bestämdhet
Core pattern: den/det/de + adjective-a + noun in definite form
📌 Grammatiknotering
When a definite noun in Swedish is preceded by an adjective, definiteness must be marked THREE times: 1) a freestanding definite article (den/det/de), 2) the weak adjective ending (-a), and 3) the suffixed definite article on the noun (-en/-et/-na).
Exempel
Fristående artikel: den, det, de (dom)
Choosing the freestanding article: den (en), det (ett), de (plural)
📌 Grammatiknotering
The freestanding article (adjektivets bestämda artikel) agrees with the noun: 'den' for singular en-words, 'det' for singular ett-words, and 'de' (pronounced 'dom' in speech) for all plurals regardless of gender.
Exempel
Adjektivets bestämda form på -a (och -e för maskulinum)
Weak adjective ending -a (and optional -e for male persons)
📌 Grammatiknotering
In definite noun phrases, the adjective always takes the weak ending '-a' across singular en-words, ett-words, and plurals. When referring to a singular male person, '-e' may optionally be used instead of '-a' (den gamle mannen).
Exempel
Dubbel bestämdhet med 'den här / den där'
Double definiteness with colloquial demonstratives 'den här' and 'den där'
📌 Grammatiknotering
The demonstratives 'den här / det här / de här' (this/these) and 'den där / det där / de där' (that/those) ALWAYS require the noun to be in the definite form, both with and without an adjective.
Exempel
Undantag 1: 'denna / detta / dessa' (Ingen dubbel bestämdhet!)
Exception 1: Formal demonstratives 'denna, detta, dessa' take INDEFINITE noun
📌 Grammatiknotering
Unlike 'den här', the formal/written demonstratives 'denna' (en), 'detta' (ett), and 'dessa' (plural) take the weak adjective (-a) followed by the INDEFINITE form of the noun (no suffixed article!).
Exempel
Undantag 2: Possessiva pronomen och genitiv-s
Exception 2: Possessives and s-genitives take weak adjective + INDEFINITE noun
📌 Grammatiknotering
After possessive pronouns (min, din, hans, sin, vår, er, deras) and nouns in the s-genitive (Annas, företagets), there is NO freestanding article and the noun MUST be in the indefinite form, while the adjective still takes '-a'.
Exempel
Undantag 3: Samma, nästa, föregående, följande
Exception 3: Words like 'samma' and 'nästa' omit both articles
📌 Grammatiknotering
Determiners such as 'samma' (the same), 'nästa' (the next), 'föregående' (the previous), and 'följande' (the following) normally take NO freestanding article and an INDEFINITE noun, even though English uses 'the'.
Exempel
Speciellt mönster med 'hela' och 'halva'
Special pattern with 'hela' (the whole) and 'halva' (half the)
📌 Grammatiknotering
'Hela' and 'halva' take a definite noun (with suffixed article) directly WITHOUT the freestanding article 'den/det/de' unless another descriptive adjective intervenes.
Exempel
Superlativ och ordningstal i bestämd form
Superlatives and ordinal numbers with double definiteness
📌 Grammatiknotering
Superlatives (-aste / -sta) and ordinal numbers (första, andra, tredje) normally require double definiteness ('den bästa filmen', 'det tredje kapitlet'), though the freestanding article is sometimes dropped in fixed titles or expressions ('första gången').
Exempel
Fasta uttryck och egennamn utan fristående artikel
Fixed expressions, names, and lexicalized phrases without 'den/det/de'
📌 Grammatiknotering
In proper names, geographical names, and closely knit idiomatic concepts (e.g., Vita huset, Röda korset, svenska språket, gamla stan), the freestanding article is omitted while the definite suffix on the noun remains.
