Generiskt pronomen: man (subjekt), en (objekt), ens / sin (possessiv)
Generic 'man' (one/you/people) and its oblique forms 'en', 'ens', 'sin'
📌 Grammatiknotering
'Man' is only used as a subject! When 'one' is the direct/prepositional object, it changes to 'en'. For possession, if 'man' is the subject of the same clause, use 'sin/sitt/sina' (and reflexive 'sig'); if 'man' is NOT the subject, use 'ens'.
Exempel
Någon, något, några (och någonting)
Indefinite 'någon' (en/someone), 'något' (ett/something), 'några' (plural)
📌 Grammatiknotering
'Någon/något/några' means both 'some/any' before a noun (agreeing in gender/number) and 'someone / something / some people' when standing alone. For 'something' in an abstract sense, 'något' and 'någonting' are interchangeable.
Exempel
Ingen, inget, inga vs. 'inte ... någon / något / några'
Negative 'ingen/inget/inga' vs. analytic 'inte ... någon/något/några'
📌 Grammatiknotering
CRITICAL WORD ORDER RULE: 'Ingen/inget/inga' (no / no one / nothing) can ALWAYS be used as the subject, or as the object in a simple main clause with ONE verb ('Jag har inga pengar'). However, in subordinate clauses, or when there is an auxiliary verb (perfekt, modal) or a preposition, you MUST split it into 'inte ... någon/något/några'!
Exempel
All, allt, alla (och allting)
Total quantifiers: all (en-mass), allt (ett-mass/everything), alla (plural/everyone)
📌 Grammatiknotering
'All' (uncountable en-word: all mat, all snö), 'allt' (uncountable ett-word: allt kaffe, allt vatten; standalone = everything), and 'alla' (plural: alla bilar; standalone = everyone). Note that the noun after 'all/allt/alla' can be either indefinite (general) or definite (specific group)!
Exempel
Många, mycket, få, lite, flera, de flesta
Countable vs. uncountable quantifiers: många/få vs. mycket/lite
📌 Grammatiknotering
For countable plurals use 'många' (many), 'få' (few), 'flera' (several), and 'de flesta' (most). For uncountable mass nouns use 'mycket' (much/a lot of) and 'lite' (a little). Note that after 'de flesta' (definite), the noun is usually indefinite in general statements ('de flesta svenskar') but definite for a specific group ('de flesta deltagarna')!
Exempel
Varje, var och en, vartenda / varenda
Distributive pronouns: varje (each/every), var och en, varenda/vartenda
📌 Grammatiknotering
'Varje' is invariable before any singular indefinite noun ('varje dag', 'varje år') and makes any following adjective take the weak '-a' form ('varje litet steg' or 'varje ny dag'—adjectives after varje usually stay strong or weak depending on emphasis, usually indefinite strong: 'varje ny anställd'). Standalone 'each one' is 'var och en'. Emphatic 'every single' is 'varenda' (en) / 'vartenda' (ett).
Exempel
Annan, annat, andra (och den andra / de andra)
'Annan' (another en), 'annat' (another ett), 'andra' (other plural / definite)
📌 Grammatiknotering
'En annan' (another, en-word), 'ett annat' (another, ett-word), 'andra' (other, plural). With the definite article ('den andra bilen', 'det andra huset', 'de andra'), it means 'the other' or 'the second'. Note: in 'en annan' (written as two words!), 'en' is always separate.
Exempel
Båda / bägge (och båda två)
Dual pronouns: 'båda' and 'bägge' (both)
📌 Grammatiknotering
Before a noun or standing alone as a pronoun, 'both' is 'båda' (or 'bägge'). Crucially, a noun after 'båda / bägge' takes the DEFINITE plural form ('båda bilarna', 'bägge förslagen'), just like after 'hela'!
Exempel
Sådan, sådant, sådana (sån, sånt, såna)
Demonstrative of quality: sådan (en), sådant (ett), sådana (plural) — 'such'
📌 Grammatiknotering
'Sådan' (pronounced and informally written 'sån / sånt / såna') agrees in gender and number with the noun. Notice the article placement: in Swedish, 'en/ett' comes BEFORE 'sådan' ('en sådan dag' = such a day), never after it!
Exempel
Vem som helst, vad som helst, vilken ... som helst
Free-choice pronouns with '... som helst' (anyone, anything, whichever)
📌 Grammatiknotering
Adding 'som helst' to question words creates free-choice pronouns ('any ... at all'): 'vem som helst' (anyone at all), 'vad som helst' (anything at all), 'när som helst' (anytime), 'var som helst' (anywhere), and 'vilken/vilket/vilka [noun] som helst' (any [noun] whatsoever).
