Grundfunktion: 'att' som infinitivmärke
The infinitive marker 'att' (to + verb)
📌 Grammatiknotering
In Swedish, 'att' serves both as the subordinating conjunction 'that' and as the infinitive marker 'to'. An infinitive phrase with 'att' can function as the subject, object, predicative, or attribute of a sentence.
Exempel
Hjälpverb UTAN 'att' (Modala och temporala hjälpverb)
Verbs that NEVER take 'att': modal and modal-like auxiliaries
📌 Grammatiknotering
Modal and auxiliary verbs are followed directly by the bare infinitive WITHOUT 'att': kunna, vilja, ska/skulle, måste, få, böra, bruka (usually do), behöva (need to), våga (dare), slippa (not have to), and råka (happen to).
Exempel
Verb med valfritt eller obligatoriskt 'att' (börja, sluta, försöka, glömma)
Verbs taking optional or mandatory 'att': försöka, börja, glömma, lova
📌 Grammatiknotering
After phase and effort verbs like 'börja' (begin), 'sluta' (stop), 'fortsätta' (continue), and 'försöka' (try), 'att' is optional ('försöka [att] förstå'). After cognitive/speech verbs like 'glömma', 'komma ihåg', 'lova', 'vägra', and 'föredra', 'att' is standard.
Exempel
Preposition + 'att' + infinitiv (utan att, genom att, i stället för att)
Prepositional infinitive clauses: genom att (by -ing), utan att (without -ing)
📌 Grammatiknotering
Where English uses a preposition + gerund ('by doing', 'without knowing', 'instead of waiting', 'after eating'), Swedish ALWAYS uses Preposition + 'att' + Infinitive when the subject is the same as the main clause!
Exempel
Placering av negation och satsadverbial: 'att inte + infinitiv'
Word order in negated infinitive phrases: 'att inte' + infinitive
📌 Grammatiknotering
In standard Swedish, sentence adverbs like 'inte', 'aldrig', and 'alltid' are placed AFTER the infinitive marker 'att' and BEFORE the infinitive verb ('att inte ge upp', 'att aldrig komma för sent')—the opposite of English 'not to give up'!
Exempel
Objekt med infinitiv (Ackusativ med infinitiv: se, höra, låta, be)
Object + bare infinitive after perception and causative verbs (se, höra, låta)
📌 Grammatiknotering
After verbs of perception ('se', 'höra', 'känna') and 'låta' (let/allow) or 'be' (ask), Swedish uses Object + bare infinitive WITHOUT 'att'. Note: reflexive pronouns inside the infinitive phrase ('sin/sig') refer to the object!
Exempel
Formellt subjekt 'det' + infinitivfras (Extraposition)
Anticipatory 'det' with postponed infinitive clauses
📌 Grammatiknotering
Instead of starting a sentence with a heavy 'att'-infinitive phrase, Swedish usually puts dummy 'det' in the subject slot and places the infinitive phrase at the end. Note: predicate adjectives after 'det är/blir' MUST take the neuter '-t' form!
Exempel
Adjektiv + preposition + att + infinitiv vs. Adjektiv + att + infinitiv
Adjectives complemented by infinitives (lätt att förstå vs. bra på att lyssna)
📌 Grammatiknotering
Evaluative adjectives ('lätt', 'svår', 'rolig', 'omöjlig', 'viktig') take 'att' + infinitive directly. Adjectives expressing a personal attitude or skill ('glad över', 'rädd för', 'trött på', 'bra på', 'intresserad av') MUST keep their preposition before 'att'!
Exempel
Perfekt infinitiv: (att) ha + supinum
The perfect infinitive: (att) ha + supine for prior actions
📌 Grammatiknotering
To express that the infinitive action took place BEFORE the time of the main verb, Swedish uses '(att) ha' + supinum. It is especially common after 'efter att' ('efter att ha ätit' = after having eaten) and modal verbs of inference ('måste ha glömt').
Exempel
Kunskap om hur man gör något: 'veta hur man + presens'
Translating 'know how to do': 'veta hur man gör' or 'kunna + infinitive'
📌 Grammatiknotering
Unlike English ('I know how to swim / how to fix it'), Swedish NEVER uses 'hur att + infinitiv'! For general skills use 'kunna' ('Jag kan simma'); for knowing a procedure use a full clause with 'man' or the subject ('Jag vet hur man lagar den').
