Relativpronomenet 'som' (Subjekt och objekt)
The universal relative pronoun 'som' (who, which, that)
📌 Grammatiknotering
'Som' is an invariable relative marker used for both people and things, singular and plural, and as either subject or object in the relative clause. It is the most frequent relative word in Swedish.
Exempel
Utelämnande av 'som' i objektsposition
Omitting 'som' when it is NOT the subject of the relative clause
📌 Grammatiknotering
When 'som' functions as the direct object or prepositional object (i.e., when the relative clause already has its own subject), 'som' can be omitted, just like in English. If 'som' is the subject, it can NEVER be omitted.
Exempel
Prepositioner i relativsatser med 'som'
Preposition stranding at the end of 'som'-clauses
📌 Grammatiknotering
'Som' can NEVER be preceded directly by a preposition (på som, med som are impossible). Instead, the preposition must be placed at the end of the relative clause (preposition stranding).
Exempel
Genitivrelativet 'vars' (whose)
Possessive relative pronoun 'vars' (whose / of which)
📌 Grammatiknotering
'Vars' expresses possession in relative clauses ('whose') and is invariable regardless of gender or number. The noun following 'vars' ALWAYS takes its indefinite form (no definite suffix).
Exempel
Relativpronomenet 'vilken / vilket / vilka'
Inflected relative pronouns: vilken (en), vilket (ett), vilka (plural)
📌 Grammatiknotering
Primarily used in formal written Swedish, 'vilken' agrees in gender and number with its antecedent: 'vilken' (common/en), 'vilket' (neuter/ett), 'vilka' (plural). Unlike 'som', it can follow a preposition directly.
Exempel
Satsrelativet ', vilket ...' (Syftning på hel sats)
Sentential relative ', vilket ...' referring to a whole clause
📌 Grammatiknotering
When a relative clause refers back to the entire preceding statement rather than a single noun, Swedish ALWAYS uses ', vilket' (never 'som'). It is equally common in spoken and written Swedish.
Exempel
Relativa adverb för plats: 'där' och 'dit'
Relative adverbs of place: 'där' (where/static) and 'dit' (where to/motion)
📌 Grammatiknotering
When referring to a place noun, Swedish distinguishes between location ('där' = where / at which) and direction ('dit' = where to / to which), mirroring the här/hit and där/dit distinction.
Exempel
Relativt 'när' och 'då' efter tidsuttryck
Temporal relative clauses with 'när' and 'då'
📌 Grammatiknotering
After nouns denoting time (dagen, året, gången, ögonblicket), relative clauses are introduced by 'då' or 'när' (when / on which).
Exempel
Fritt relativt 'vad (som)' efter allt, inget, det
Relative 'vad (som)' and 'som' after 'allt', 'inget', 'något'
📌 Grammatiknotering
After indefinite quantifiers like 'allt' (everything), 'inget' (nothing), and 'något' (something), Swedish normally uses 'som' (not 'vad'). When 'vad' is used as a free relative ('what'), it requires 'som' if it is the subject of the clause.
Exempel
Ordföljd och BIFF-regeln i relativsatser
Word order in relative clauses: subordinate clause structure
📌 Grammatiknotering
Every relative clause is a subordinate clause (bisats). Therefore, sentence adverbs like 'inte', 'ofta', 'alltid', and 'redan' must precede the finite verb.
