Allmän bisatsordföljd (Subjekt + Satsadverbial + Finit verb)
Canonical subordinate clause template (BIFF rule across all complex clauses)
📌 Grammatiknotering
In standard Swedish subordinate clauses, the subordinator (konjunktion/frågeord/relativpronomen) is followed strictly by: Subject + Sentence Adverbial (inte, aldrig, ofta, ju, väl, ändå) + Finite Verb + Infinite Verb + Object/Adverbials.
Exempel
Satsfläta (Spetsställning ur en bisats!)
Clause intertwining (Satsfläta): extracting an element out of a subordinate clause
📌 Grammatiknotering
A hallmark of idiomatic B2 Swedish is 'satsfläta': fronting an object or adverbial from inside an 'att'-clause (or relative clause) to the very first position (Fundament) of the main clause for topical focus! The main clause then inverts (V2), while the rest of the subordinate clause stays at the end.
Exempel
Relativ satsfläta (Det är ett förslag som jag tror fungerar)
Relative clause intertwining: relativizing out of an embedded clause
📌 Grammatiknotering
Swedish frequently relativizes an element that logically belongs inside a deeper embedded clause ('en person som jag vet är pålitlig'). Note: when the relativized element is the SUBJECT of the deepest clause, 'att' MUST be omitted after the bridge verb (tror, vet, tycker)!
Exempel
Huvudsatsordföljd i 'att'-bisatser (Undantag från BIFF-regeln)
Embedded V2 word order in 'att'-clauses after assertive verbs
📌 Grammatiknotering
After verbs of saying, thinking, or explaining (säga, mena, tycka, veta, förstå), an 'att'-clause that expresses a strong assertion or has a fronted adverbial inside it can take main-clause V2 word order ('att i morgon måste vi...', 'att hon hade faktiskt rätt'). This is impossible after non-assertive verbs or in 'eftersom/om' clauses.
Exempel
Nästlade bisatser av första, andra och tredje graden
Multi-level nested subordinate clauses (clause within a clause)
📌 Grammatiknotering
When a subordinate clause contains another subordinate clause (e.g., an 'om'-clause or relative clause inside an 'att'-clause), the outer clause's verb only appears after any initial embedded clause is completed, and EVERY subordinate level follows its own BIFF order.
Exempel
Korrelatet 'det faktum att' och 'det att' (Substantiviska bisatser)
Prepositional 'att'-clauses and 'det faktum att' (the fact that)
📌 Grammatiknotering
Because Swedish allows prepositions directly before 'att'-clauses ('bero på att', 'leda till att'), you rarely need 'the fact that'. However, when an 'att'-clause stands in subject position or needs emphasis after a preposition, 'det faktum att' or 'det förhållandet att' is used.
Exempel
Jämförelsebisatser: 'ju ... desto / dess'
Proportional correlative clauses: 'ju + comparative ... desto/dess + comparative'
📌 Grammatiknotering
In Swedish 'the more ... the more' constructions, the first clause starts with 'ju' + comparative and uses SUBORDINATE clause word order (Subject + Adverb + Verb). The second (main) clause starts with 'desto' (or 'dess' / colloquial 'ju') + comparative and uses INVERTED V2 word order (Verb + Subject)!
Exempel
Allmänna relativsatser med 'än' och 'vad / vem / var ... än'
Free-choice concessive relative clauses with '... än' (whatever, whoever, wherever)
📌 Grammatiknotering
To express 'whatever happens', 'whoever calls', or 'wherever you go', Swedish uses a question word ('vad', 'vem', 'var', 'hur') followed by the particle 'än' inside the subordinate clause (with 'som' required if 'vad/vem' is the subject!).
Exempel
Samordning av bisatser och utelämnande av subjunktion
Coordinating subordinate clauses with 'och / men' and ellipsis
📌 Grammatiknotering
When two subordinate clauses are linked by 'och' or 'men' under a single subordinator ('eftersom...', 'att...'), both clauses MUST maintain subordinate (BIFF) word order, even if the conjunction and subject are not repeated in the second clause.
Exempel
Följdbisatser och gradbisatser med 'så ... att'
Degree and result clauses with 'så (+ adj/adv) ... att'
📌 Grammatiknotering
'Så [adjective/adverb] att...' (so ... that) introduces a subordinate result clause. Notice that inside the 'att'-clause, sentence adverbs precede the finite verb unless emphatic V2 is intentionally used.
