Oh nee! Ik ben mijn portemonnee kwijt! Wat nu? Ik moet naar de politie? Nee, eerst naar de afdeling Gevonden Voorwerpen. Ik loop snel naar de balie. Een vriendelijke man kijkt me aan. ‘Goedendag,’ zeg ik een beetje zenuwachtig. ‘Ik ben mijn portemonnee kwijt. Ik was hier net, op het perron.’ De man knikt. ‘Kunt u uw portemonnee beschrijven?’ vraagt hij. Beschrijven? Hoe doe ik dat? Ik zucht. Het is een kleine, zwarte portemonnee. Ik hoop dat hij hem heeft gevonden.

Let's pause our story for a moment and look at some key phrases from that segment.

  • kwijt zijn — to have lost (something), Ik ben mijn tas kwijt.
  • de portemonnee — the wallet, Mijn portemonnee is zwart.
  • de afdeling Gevonden Voorwerpen — the lost and found department, Ik ga naar de afdeling Gevonden Voorwerpen.
  • de balie — the counter, De man zit achter de balie.
  • beschrijven — to describe, Kunt u uw portemonnee beschrijven?

‘Wacht even,’ zegt hij. Hij pakt een doos. Mijn hart klopt snel. Hij opent een zwarte portemonnee! ‘Is dit hem?’ vraagt hij. Ja! Het is mijn portemonnee! Ik geef mijn identiteitskaart aan de man. ‘Even controleren,’ zegt hij.
